As a complete beginner just a year ago, I've experienced firsthand the transformative power of Eoin's teaching. My understanding of the oil painting process has grown exponentially, and with each class, I discover something new to marvel at and learn from. I've also discovered a new and deeply rewarding hobby. The Studio's welcoming environment and the camaraderie of fellow students makes the sessions very enjoyable.
For anyone wishing to go on an artistic journey or to hone their skills, I wholeheartedly recommend this Studio. Whether you are a novice like I was or a seasoned artist looking to refine/improve your talent, you won't find a better place.

This place is a literal dream for anyone interested in learning about painting or drawing, from the calm, patience and enthusiasm of the instruction from Eoin, to the stunning bright, high ceiling rooms you get to learn in, surrounded by beautiful works of art. I've been trying to find somewhere to learn that suits my schedule (I'm a shift worker) for a long time and the flexibility Eoin offers is unrivaled. I've seen him teach drawing, watercolour and oil painting and his knowledge and experience is obvious but not at all intimidating. This is a wonderful place to develop skill and also your own style, whether a beginner or otherwise. The classes are set up as a group doing their individual works while Eoin gives one on one instruction and also short demonstrations to the group. I cannot recommend highly enough and I can't believe how much I've learnt in such a short time. Do yourself a favour and give it a go! "

Katie Charleston ( Amsterdam) 1 month intensive course 2022
I did the 1-month intensive course here, as an 18 year old student from Amsterdam. I started the course with a slight lack of knowledge in art movements and styles, and as a result of this I was not able to fully identify with my own style in painting. Throughout this course I was exposed to many works, artists, movements and styles of the past that Eoin had handpicked for me based on my personal artistic mood-board. This allowed me to experiment with multiple new elements and eventually gain a clearer view of my own style in painting.
Eoin's approach in teaching I felt was adjusted per individual, depending on what the students were looking for as well as their method of understanding. For example, for myself who makes music, Eoin explained the importance in the different use of brush strokes through conceptualising it with elements of music, timbre and tone. These things will stick by me for life!
Thank you Eoin!

Over the past year, attending art classes with Artist Eoin Llewellyn, has been nothing short of inspiring. Eoin's expertise and thoughtful teaching approach have not only refined my technical skills with paints and canvas but have also imparted a profound understanding of the art world's intricacies and beauty.
His mentorship has been particularly transformative for me, instilling a great confidence that has encouraged me to pursue a new path in life with enthusiasm and assurance.
I am immensely grateful for the knowledge and confidence he has shared, making art a vital part of my life's journey.

A. McGuire - (Dublin - Ireland) Studying Sculpture, Drawing and Abstract Oil painting - 2024 ongoing
I highly recommend East Coast Art Studios. You don't have to have any background in art, and you can focus on whatever it is that you're interested in.
I contacted Eoin at East Coast Art Studios initially because I wanted to learn enough about sculpture to put together a portfolio for applying to art college. I'd never done an art class and hadn't tried to paint or draw since primary school. Eoin suggested that I started with a Drawing Course over a weekend. It was fantastic. Everyone in the class were beginners. By the end of the weekend we were all confident that we could draw a picture, which is incredible. We also had a lovely weekend together which added to the whole experience. I've studied sculpture for about two months and now I've moved on to abstract painting. I can't wait to see how far I've gotten in six months time.

I took an incredible amount away from my month intensive course in Eoin's studio. Having attended a couple of different courses in London for 'Intermediate Painting' and finding them too broad and not as beneficial as I would have hoped, the acute attention to detail and specific training tailored to your personal needs that Eoin provides was extremely refreshing! I took on this course to learn a strong foundation of oil paints, traditional techniques and processes and received just that. Eoin also takes great time and interest in identifying what your objective is for the course and offering knowledge of styles and existing Artists who relate and compliment your style. This I found unique from other courses, leading your own progress, for me, made the experience a lot more beneficial. I have gained a much stronger understanding of colour palettes, techniques with specific brushes, layering and tone and I really feel comfortable and equip to produce a higher standard of work. As a practicing Artist in Berlin, I will definitely be continuing these sessions to develop my skills further. The relaxed, inspiring atmosphere of the studio and the lovely small groups of people which you meet along the way are also a wonderful bonus!

I found Eoin's classes when I was searching for a proper artist to orientate me in the fields of illustration and composition. What I found was something much, much deeper and fascinating than what initially I was looking for. Eoin is a tremendously good teacher, with a more than excellent disposal of resources, from a very well-located studio, to many books to consult, all the correct materials you might need for work and many other aspects that will turn the class into an amazing trip into discovering your capacities and beyond. He has an incredible "sixth sense" into discovering your potential and also help you to develop your vision and enthusiasm, even in areas you might have not put any attention before. His knowledge on art history, understanding of the techniques both from contemporary to the Old Masters, refined study and observation, both on life modeling sessions, simple sketching, and deep understanding of color are beyond that of any other person in the field of arts I´ve encountered in the past.
He also manages perfectly to present all this amazing knowledge, in a very warm, relaxed and enjoyable environment. The classes are fun, really to the point, and normally you feel time flies fast! Also the visits to art museums are fantastic, where you normally will be guided by his expert eye, recognizing techniques, the story behind a painting, understanding of the time period, color management and unique composition on each example.
I´m more than happy and feel very grateful and lucky to have found Eoin. I would extremely and highly recommend anyone who might be searching for a teacher who can immediately from the very beginning put you on the right path, no matter if you are a full beginner as I was, or intermediate/advanced student. I really can´t wait to continue studying with him and the next classes to come!

I am a recent high school graduate, currently studying at Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, New York. I attended Berlin Art Class with instructor, Eoin Llewellyn, taking courses in painting and drawing, for two months in 2016. Prior to attending Berlin Art Classes, I didn’t have a lot of drawing or painting experience. However, within a month I saw immense improvement in my technical skills. The class sizes are small, which allows for Mr. Llewellyn to teach the entire class and work with students individually. This kind of working environment is perfect for art instruction because it encourages students to not only learn from the teacher, but also from each other’s work. In the drawing course Mr. Llewellyn taught a variety of skills using different drawing materials. He taught how to draw first using the Bargue Plate method, a method I still in my university courses to this day. He also introduced techniques using materials such as charcoal, charcoal pencil, graphite pencil, paint brushes, cotton swabs, cotton balls and many more. I still use all of these techniques in my art courses at Pratt Institute this year.

My way to Berlin Art Class started when I was stuck completely with my portrait-paintings and flesh-tones and was desperately looking for help. Eoin`s studio seemed to be the only one in Berlin that has the mission to seriously teach classic realistic painting and appreciates classic arts and the academy. It turned out to be one of the greatest choices in my life because Eoin’s input and teaching changed so much for the better! Eoin is a fantastic teacher, he is committed to the fine arts and cares so much about the success of his pupils. His gift is to be highly motivating, inspiring, charming, patient and he has a great knowledge of both art history and painting techniques and shares his craft skills. With him, for the first time in my artistic life, I started to understand the very essence of how great painters technically did their masterpieces. Eoin’s mission is for the pupil to realize and understand the old masters techniques on an almost scientific level and adopt that knowledge to one's own paintings. So in only a few courses I more and more could paint contemporary contents in Rubens, Hals or Rembrandt techniques.

I have been attending courses with Berlin Art Class and am still learning new things every time. I had never worked in oil before and felt unsure about how to use color. At Berlin Art Class, I felt I had come to the right place and also saw progress immediately. Eoin is not only an experienced and versatile artist, but with his concept of drawing from the knowledge of the work of excellent artists, he also manages to support each student in their own artistic process. He is extremely helpful and puts in a lot of time and effort to answer his students' questions. He has a fine instinct for the nature of problems arising in his students' work, and I am often baffled when by showing me parallels with other artists' work, he points me towards solutions for blocks I had not even been able to put my finger on.
The atmosphere in class is always pleasant and helpful. By pointing out the strengths of the students' works, Eoin achieves that the participants can learn from each other no matter what level they are at. He is always helpful as well as honest in his advice, and his students' visible progress speaks for itself. As strong-smelling chemicals often cause problems for me, I am also very happy about the studio being turpentine-free and Berlin Art Class generally not using poisonous paint. Berlin Art Class teaches all the basics you need for the work of a professional artist while at the same time being suitable for beginners.

As an amateur painter I bought the 3 private sessions. I did not have any professional training or guidance before so I did not know what to expect. Eoin immediately created a relaxing atmosphere inside his quite inspiring and intimate studio. He was attentive and analytical with my previous work and where I wanted to go next. When I did not manage to bring any work that I wanted to practice on he quickly led me to many suggestions in his immense collection of pictures of old and new painters based on few descriptions for what I wanted. He constructed the classes so that we got as much work done as possible but in a way that did not feel rushed. I managed to paint two portraits during this time. One monochromatic and one in color. The latter took two days. The teaching process was based on guidance and communication of inspiration rather than direct instructions. The communication of painting concepts felt tailored and spoke directly to my own way of understanding. I felt inspired and got quickly into the «moment of flow» when I began to paint. He showed great respect and enthusiasm to individual interpretations such as brush strokes and shape, thus encouraged to let emotions play a part rather than photocopying of the art piece in front of you. Since the latter painting needed some extra time, he let me stay in the studio during his drawing group classes to finish up. I then realized that he quickly managed to approach each and everyone in the class differently based on their level of understanding, skills and interest with great progress in their work and individual satisfaction. The paintings I produced in Eoin’s class compared to my previous work look years of training apart. I could not believe it myself. Eoin Llewellyn's own art work and knowledge of painting is top notch and inspiring in itself. But the way he manages to approach each individual student with enthusiasm and attention to their individual style and expressive needs proves that he is truly a master of teaching as well. I would highly recommend Eoin Llewellyn’s art class to anyone with the slightest ambition of learning the arts of painting. I will definitely come back myself.

I took a painting course for three days and I found it both inspiring and informative. In a short period of time the basic techniques of the old masters are presented to you and a new world of playing with colour and form can take place. You will never look at a painting the same way again! The atmosphere in the studio is relaxed and cosy. I found Eoin to be pedagogic and a very inspiring teacher. I can highly recommend the course to anyone interested in painting and the techniques behind it.
Susie D., (Australia)
My day with Eoin began at the National Gallerie. We looked at many paintings, deconstructing the technique, and discussing the use of pigments and mediums. We then spent the afternoon in his studio putting all our discussions into practice. At this stage in my development as a painter, it was very insightful to have Eoin watch me paint and point out habits that that I barely notice I have. After discussing with Eoin the things that I wanted to achieve in my work, he was able to observe my technique and highlight why these things are eluding me. Regardless of one's experience as a painter, I would highly recommend a day with Eoin. He definitely has the ability to teach from the ground up and sense where his advice can be tailored to the particular needs of a student. I have learned many valuable lessons. I am excited to get back to my own studio to put them into practice.
Viktor, (Denmark)
I had two great days with Eoin! I participated in two drawing lessons of 6 hours each, and I learned a lot of new techniques to make my drawings much, much better. The lessons were very relaxed and just after the first day I had made drawings that I would have never imagined I was able to create. Eoin is an amazing teacher and I would recommend his lessons to everyone who wants to learn new skills in drawing or painting.

Eoin was a really amazing teacher. He seems to so much enjoying both drawing and teaching and I feel the energy of this! I recommend both the drawing and oil painting classes. In drawing class you learn a different thing in every single class – you may be amazed at the skills you develop!!

I spent two days with Eoin in a 1-to-1 course and I learned so much, what a great experience.
We went to a museum, where I gradually learned how to read a painting through Eoin's amazing knowledge of ancient masters' techniques. I then practiced differents techniques under the ever experienced eye of Eoin, who with passion, intelligence and humour simply teaches you how to be a better painter. Now I just want to paint and put at use all I have been learning in just 2 days!

Eoin is a fantastic artist and teacher. I entered his class knowing next to nothing about the fundamentals of drawing and oil painting. I was clueless when it came to the proper use of materials, colors, brushes, and all of the other accoutrements of painting which can be very confusing and intimidating for a beginner. Over the past year Eoin has worked with me to develop a solid understanding of the materials and techniques used by contemporary painters and the old masters. He showed me how to properly organize and manage a palette, clean brushes, mix colors, and work with different mediums. He showed me how to choose brushes, hold them, and understand when and how a brush can be used to achieve a desired effect. He showed me how to properly light a model, arrange a still life, and work towards a cohesive composition. His classes will give you a great foundation in technique and practice which is applicable to all styles of painting.
Eoin has an incredibly extensive knowledge of art history, and can always point you in the direction of a relevant book or image for inspiration and instruction. A great benefit of attending his classes is that you gain access to his very large library of art history books which range from Durer to Degas to Velazquez to Gerhard Richter. It's always inspiring when he opens the class with an overview of a particular technique or compositional theme, showing you relevant examples spanning over 500+ years of painting history.
I've found the museum visits that Eoin periodically arranges extremely helpful as well. Eoin has a great understanding of painting technique, and will help you develop an eye for understanding how certain paintings are organized and constructed. After a few trips to the gallery with Eoin, you'll develop a set of skills for understanding the way in which a particular painting was realized (which colors lay on top of which, how the artist prepared the canvas, which sections of the painting are glazed, how a particular color was mixed, why the composition was arranged in a particular way, etc.) It's truly fantastic to get this sort of instruction, and I honestly don't know where else you would go to get it. It's fun to go to a museum and learn about the historical context behind a painting, but it's even more fun to go with Eoin and learn about the nitty gritty details behind the technique and construction of images.
Eoin is a great motivator, and will work with you on a personal basis to help you achieve whatever your artistic goal might be. He can instruct you in classical, modern and/or abstract styles. He's honest with feedback, and will push you hard enough to ensure that you continue to progress. The classes are super fun, he cultivates a really friendly and open classroom atmosphere, and he's a really nice guy! If you're just looking for a weekly painting session to enjoy, or more serious and prolonged study, I would definitely recommend Eoin's classes without reservation.
