ABOUT US

This place is a literal a dream for anyone interested in learning about painting or drawing, from the calm, patience and enthusiasm of the instruction from Eoin, to the stunning bright, high ceiling rooms you get to learn in, surrounded by beautiful works of art. I've been trying to find somewhere to learn that suits my schedule (I'm a shift worker) for a long time and the flexibility Eoin offers is unrivaled. I've seen him teach drawing, watercolour and oil painting and his knowledge and experience is obvious but not at all intimidating. This is a wonderful place to develop skill and also your own style, whether a beginner or otherwise. The classes are set up as a group doing their individual works while Eoin gives one on one instruction and also short demonstrations to the group. I cannot recommend highly enough and I can't believe how much I've learnt in such a short time. Do yourself a favour and give it a go! " Leah  T. ongoing client with focus on the contemporary figure .

About the studio

Practicing artist Eoin Llewellyn founded his studio in Berlin before returning to Ireland to open. East Coast Art Studios in Bray, Co. Wicklow. The courses provided offer students the only opportunity in Ireland to study both classical & contemporary painting and drawing and to train professionally on a part-time basis all year round. The studio is open to all levels, welcoming beginners to professional artists. It provides a positive and creative atmosphere where students can explore their individual artistic goals and interests.

How you will learn
The studio is a large French-style atelier. Each student is provided with their own easel, paint, glass palette and drawing materials. You will learn how to set up a palette, use brushes correctly, mix and apply colour alongside a multitude of drawing and oil painting techniques suited to your level and chosen focus area. Tuition and demonstrations are provided by Eoin throughout each class. Students can choose to study classical or contemporary approaches to portraiture, landscape and the figure taking inspiration from movements such as Impressionism,
Bauhaus, Abstraction and Expressionism. The studio’s extensive library enables students to explore work from old masters and contemporary artists e.g., Goya, Picasso, Sargent, Lucien Freud, Jenny Saville, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Diego Velazquez, Monet, Marlene Dumas and Peter Doig. Students are also encouraged to develop a personal style,
working from their own images and drawings.

Students join the studio for a multitude of reasons. For example, you may wish to:

  • Learn how to paint and draw.
  • Develop a portfolio for admission to art or design college or for professional purposes
  • Understand the flesh palette from the Venetian, French and Flemish schools of painting
  • Study techniques such as grisaille, layering, glazing, sfumato, imprimatura and alla prima
  • Learn how to transform initial ideas into fully-realised drawings and paintings from sketch book to finished work.
  • Develop themes into a series of work for a gallery show or portfolio
  • Overcome creative blocks from the home studio or fear of simply doing art
