1. I’ve never painted or drawn before. Are these classes too advanced for me?
East Coast Art Studios works with students of all levels. Students are taught individually and according to their own pace. Instructor Eoin Llewellyn works with students at their current level—whether a complete beginner, intermediate or practicing artist. All students develop according to their own timetable, with progress determined by how much time, practice, training and research students can commit to.
Beginners should book the foundation course
Drawing courses are beneficial to all levels.
To fit a busy work schedule book weekly classes which you can book all year round this is our most popular booking and suits most clients timetables.
2. I’m a practicing artist. Is East Coast Art Studio suitable for me?
We have many practicing artists come to the studio. Many work in a contemporary fashion with acrylic, or are adept in drawing, but wish to improve a particular style or technique. Areas of focus include form, light, tonal value, portraiture, mastering the flesh palette, colour mixing, brush application and techniques such as sfumato, alla prima, grizalle, underpainting, glazing, etc. Practicing artists also use the studio to transition from abstract to realism, or vice versa. Discussion of website, artist statement and development of body of work for exhibition would also be part of the training an intermediate to advanced student would go through.
Because we work without turpentine, artists are introduced to ideas for creating a studio and making art in a healthy, non-toxic environment.
Intermediate to advanced could avail of the following options to best use the studio
1. Intensive course - to develop new skills quickly and a plan for your home/studio practice that can be used to develop a body of work and a consistent practice. After completing this course clients then return to the studio as often as the want to keep developing by booking the weekly classes .
2. Art Courses - Intermediate and advanced students can focus in on a particular area such as portraiture, landscape or abstraction and do a 4 day course .
These courses can be taken again and again to develop your skills to a very high standard .
3. Is instruction in English?
Yes! All instruction is in English by a native English speaker. We welcome students of all backgrounds. While a basic level of English is necessary, the course is primarily taught through demonstration and practice, so advanced English is not necessary.

7. What will I learn at East Coast Art Studios ?
Past students have used their time at the studio to:
- Try their hand at painting or drawing for the first time.
- Understand and apply a particular technique in painting.
- Gradually develop from a beginner to an experienced painter in oils in an enjoyable way among fellow students.
- Intermediate and practicing artists improve technique and application of material and deepen understanding of color mixing, painting without turpentine, and how to identify color and technique in master works.
- Understand the flesh palette from the Venetian, French and Flemish schools of painting.
- Explore techniques such as grisaille, layering, glazing, sfumato, imprimatura and alla prima. This is achieved by copying master works and applying of the technique to one's own pieces.
- Transform initial ideas and sketches into fully-realized drawings and paintings. Learn how to develop themes in a body of work and develop a body of work for a gallery show or portfolio.
- Create an original small or large oil painting or drawing with continual guidance from the teacher.
- Overcome creative blocks from the home studio or fear of simply doing art.
- Develop a portfolio for college application in art/ design/ interior design/ illustration etc.
8. Why should I take classes at East Coast Art Studios as opposed to somewhere else?
East Coast Art Studios is the only studio in Ireland that works in the European studio tradition of a practicing artist transferring studio techniques to students and fellow artists. The studio is also unique as being the only class teaching techniques from both classical to present-day painting. Students can practice in the style of Franz Hals one day and Gerhard Richter the next.
Instructor Eoin Llewellyn is a practicing artist who has spent the last 20 years studying the techniques of many artists, examining their colour palettes, brush techniques and approach to composition. This obsession with paint and its surface, as well as draftsmanship, is shared with students as practitioners in the studio.
9. Does East Coast Art Studios provide gift vouchers?
No we do not offer gift vouchers. We advise that people who want to offer a gift of a course show the website to the person who will get the gift and let them choose the course they wish to do and then buy it for them. This way they really get the course they would like whether that be drawing, oil painting for beginners or life drawing.

10. I’m overseas and need a visa to come to Ireland. Can you give a letter of invitation?
We can write you a letter of invitation to come study, but we can’t guarantee that this will be accepted by the Irish government. Please note that East Coast Art Studio is a private studio – while we are excellent at what we do we are not accredited and do not confer academic degrees. Therefore attendance at the East Coast Art Studio would not be recognised for students seeking to come to Ireland on a student visa.
