A number of students have asked will I do a tour of the Turning Heads show in the National Gallery Ireland. This is one of my areas of expertise. I just love some of the paintings in this show and many of you are learning the very techniques and palette used! Teaching creatives how to examine paintings and explore the layers and strata that create the luminous varied surfaces of various periods throughout the past 500 years. We will explore glazing, Sfumato, underpainting, grisaille, different palettes. We will also touch on composition and how to do quick sketches from paintings in the gallery and how to utilise what you learn and to bring back to your home studio and apply in your own work. Places are limited so book early. You can also buy a ticket for a friend who may find it of interest.
Highlights of Show -
"On view in the Beit Wing from 24 February to 26 May 2024, this exhibition features works by Dutch and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who were exponents of the tronie – an intriguing painting of a head. Paintings include Study of an Old Woman by Rubens, The Laughing Man, 1629-1630, by Rembrandt and The Man with the Golden Helmet, c. 1650 from the circle of Rembrandt. Vermeer’s most exquisitely detailed tronie, Girl with the Red Hat, c.1665-1667, is an exhibition highlight."- National Gallery
