Figure & Portraiture Frans Hals to Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville
ongoing all year round- choose any Wed,Sat 10-4.

Suitable for all levels  interested in painting Figure/ portraits in oil and developing their techniques in understanding how to use brushes, mix flesh tones, set up your palette , work without turpentine. For the mid to advanced level painter you will further develop your color palette, understanding, and build on what you already know. I will look at your existing work (send images) and we will discuss key questions about the techniques of the painters you love.

The expressive figure/portrait is an exciting exploration of a quick underpainting sketch on top of which the flesh palette of 6 colors is placed wet in wet -Alla Prima. Students will learn how to develop their language of brush work, palette setup and how to paint flesh, hair and backgrounds in the style of a number of artists . Prints are provided to work from in the studio.

The limited Palette, six colors that lead to the magic of flesh and the basis to painting flesh from the time of the Egyptians up to present day. By harnessing the simple but complex relationships between the earth colors of the limited palette the painter can explore and harness its power to create exciting passages of paint that have an energy that embraces the viscous nature of oil paint. This research that will be explained and demonstrated in this 4 day course will cover such painters as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville. People will learn how to construct a head quickly and create lively sketches in oil and resolved passages. We will also explore glazing in the 4th session.

When you complete this initial workshop or if you are currently painting with oils we would recommend you join the studio classes Wednesdays or Saturdays. In these sessions, you can develop your practice throughout the year and focus on whatever subjects and techniques are of interest to you, either in contemporary or classical painting and drawing. We also recommend you do the drawing course as drawing underpins all portraiture.

*Our courses work on a modular basis and reinforce one another. Understanding and applying the different styles you learn in these modules will ensure the development of each student’s techniques and individual artistic style. Students interested in ongoing study with  East Coast Art Studios can read more about our various syllabi here.
