All materials supplied. No turpentine or solvents are used in the class. All images used in classroom instruction are supplied by the teacher.
Introduction: Drawing is the most immediate of all art forms and is the root language to all painting and sculpture. Within the works of great artists are hidden the keys to the fundamental techniques and skills in drawing. This class identifies many of these keys and teaches students to read drawings of the masters to understand their techniques.
Objective: Through the exploration of master works, students will gain familiarity with a number of fundamental drawing techniques. Following the course students will be able to use ratio-based measuring to create drawings, and will have comfort with a number of line, pressure and composition techniques to create energy and rhythm in their work.
Day 1
On day one the class explores proportion, with students learning the measurement techniques used for accurate drawing. Using charcoal, the class also experiments with the searching and expressive lines, and plays with rhythm, weight, composition and focus. Works from Da Vinchi, Bronzino,Giacometti, Willem de Kooning, Degas, Velazquez, Van Dyck, Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz and Marlene Dumas will be discussed.
Day 2
On day two students focus on creating a single drawing over several hours using the techniques introduced the previous day. During this period students will receive individual input from the teacher and will be given home-based exercises for continued development advise on materials to purchase and individual advise tailored to the needs of each student.
