Course Overview
Develop confidence, technique, and artistic expression in this inspiring introduction to drawing at East Coast Art Studios. Through the study of master artists like Michelangelo, Ingres, Degas, Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz, Picasso, Giacometti and Jenny Saville, you’ll uncover the expressive “language of line,” learning not only academic technique but how to imbue emotion and life into your drawings.
Over 5 full days, you’ll progress through structured studies and guided practice:
- Introduction & Technique Demonstration – learn drawing fundamentals and complete studies from Bargue plates to understand structure, proportion, and form
- Curved Line & Value Systems – explore softer tonal modelling and diffused light through sculpture studies
- Historical Studies – recreate works by Degas and Ingres using pencil and Pitt pastel on specialist papers
- Portrait Focus – study John Singer Sargent and/or a contemporary portrait to refine likeness and brush control
- Personal Project & Feedback – create original drawings inspired by techniques you found most engaging, and set a plan for ongoing study

Course Overview
Build confidence, technical skill, and personal expression in this immersive introduction to oil painting. Working in our large French-style atelier, you will learn the fundamentals of oil painting, from preparing a canvas and setting up a palette to understanding brushwork, colour mixing, and classical painting processes. Students will study both classical and contemporary approaches to painting, using our extensive studio library to take inspiration from artists such as Goya, Velázquez, Sargent, Monet, Picasso, Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Marlene Dumas and Peter Doig. Students can work in portraiture, landscape, or the figure, and are encouraged to develop a personal direction, including working from their own drawings and reference images.
Over 5 full days, you’ll progress through structured studies and guided practice:
- Introduction & Materials Demonstration – learn how to prepare a canvas, set up a classical palette, understand different brush types and their uses
- Underpainting & Grisaille – explore classical underpainting methods, sketching in paint, tonal block-ins, and grisaille painting to build strong structure, light, and form before colour
- Introduction to Colour & Limited Palettes – learn colour mixing, temperature control and harmony using an Old Master limited palette
- Painting Techniques – create studies inspired by artists such as Sargent, Velázquez, Monet or Freud while learning about edge quality, transitions, wet-on-wet and glazing
- Personal Project – develop a painting based on your own interests (abstraction, portrait, figure, landscape), integrating the techniques learned, with individual feedback and guidance for continued study

Intensive art course

The package includes:
- An initial 1-to-1 session 3 hour session and 20 minute wrap up talk
- 8 x Wed or & Sat group painting/drawing session
- 4 canvas included - 2 x 30x 40cm 2 x 40x50cm
- materials included - use of oil paints and medium and basic drawing materials.

Course Overview
This is one of our most popular options with both regular students and beginners who want to start or continue their artistic journey at their own pace. Join anytime throughout the year and study in the studio in a flexible, supportive environment with professional tuition and demonstrations by Eoin. This booking includes 12 hours of studio time, which you can schedule across Wednesdays and/or Saturdays over any 4-week period. You choose your own dates at the time of booking. Students can work in drawing and/or oil painting, focusing on portraiture, figure, landscape, or personal projects. Instruction is fully tailored to your level — whether you are a complete beginner learning fundamentals or an advanced student refining technique and developing a personal style.
Booking Times
You may choose one of the following options to make up your 12 hours:
· 2 x full day sessions (10am–4pm)
· 1 x full day (10am–4pm) and 2 x 3-hour morning sessions (10am–1pm)
Conditions of Booking
· All sessions must be completed within any 4-week period
· All chosen dates must be provided at the time of booking
· If you are new, your first session must be a full day (10am–4pm)
Continuing to Study at East Coast Art Studios
After completing this initial set of classes, most students simply rebook more Daytime or Evening Classes. This is the main way our students continue studying with us all year round - you come and go as suits your schedule.

Beginners can enjoy getting the basics in classical and contemporary drawing & oil painting their first 8 sessions drawing from the techniques of Italian and French art and European and American art for contemporary practice. Looking to modern artists like Rothko Lee Krasner, Diebenkorn for abstraction and Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon Michael Booreman and Jenny Saville for the figure,
If you are mid to advanced level we will develop you in the areas you wish to improve and explore. You direct where you would like your teaching to go and the techniques or vision you would like to understand better. We have a large library of books and references to study from and you can develop your skills to a high level in the figure, portraiture, landscape and abstraction.

Clients use these classes to gradually increase their knowledge in a given area, create portfolio of work etc Book as often as you want throughout the year! The Monday classes will be ongoing all year round so you can continue to develop at your own pace in Portraiture, Landscapes, the figure and abstraction.
This booking is valid for any Monday evenings only for the over the Winter Term - 8 x classes Jan 5th - Feb 23rd
These bookings are non transferable, refundable and cannot be taken on other studio days. Mondays and Tuesday Evenings are separate bookings.
