ABOUT US

We host daytime, evening and private classes to a total of 10 students in painting and up to 15 students in drawing. Our studio in Bray is a large 120 mtr Sq 1870 Victorian building with high ceilings and original marble fireplaces. Floorboards and professional lighting for painting installed throughout the space. I wish that when people enter the space they lose time and can really enter into a state of creation. Our teaching structure is designed to help you meet your artistic goals regardless of your level of experience over a period of time that suits your budget and personal timetable. Beginners and mid level to experienced artists work side by side in the studio. Our philosophy is fluid and draws on all time periods to inform how to understand all aspects of art and its creation. The studio is like an open Art college with a very clear way of teaching directed to each individual personally and their work and ambitions based on where they are at when they enter the studio.
You are treated respectively and your work , if any, is also respected and built on from the first meeting.
The space we have tried to create is one where people can really blossom as a creative person. You can be a banker, boxer, gardener or introverted mycologist, just come and draw and paint and I will get you to where you want to go to. Your subject matter is up to you whether that be flowers the nude figure, nebula, nihilism, or Monet. Just be passionate about it that's all that matters we will show you the techniques and how to create a body of work over time.
You can come twice a month or work intensively 3 days a week and get a shared studios space in our studio annex off the main studio and paint 6 days a week. .One can also study at nighttime 6-9 pm and do life drawing see sessions available! The courses are designed to allow for people with different budgets and time frames to gradually study art techniques to a high standard whether abstract or realistic, contemporary or classical in a supportive non ego environment. In the studio you will learn by direct demonstration from the teacher - in a systematic way and over a period of time - how to paint flesh, landscape and abstraction. The teaching philosophy is as it was in the traditional ateliers of Europe of the 1500-1900's with one key difference: the studio takes all the techniques from the Renaissance, the French and Venetian schools, Impressionism, Expressionism and present day painting and study these as one. You, the student, then decides how you wish to bring these influences into your own personal work. The most insightful artists understand that the richest work draws from all time periods...
Some people travel to study with us from different parts of the world for 1-6 months. Others live in Dublin & East Coast and have kids and jobs and come every Monday morning for drawing, afternoon for painting, Tuesday nights or full days on Wednesdays/Saturdays each month - how you study is up to you. We advise all students to study both the painting and drawing aspects of our courses to progress quickly and organically and to attend and practice life drawing regularly as this is essential to training your hand in the movement and rhythm of line and form. The studio is lit with full daylight bulbs, creating perfect lighting for painting and drawing.
The teaching philosophy of East Coast Art Studios is to draw on the techniques and methods of all art periods to inform present art practice. Our mission is to help students develop their personal abilities and style quickly and to a high level of competence. Students learn to analyze the work of the artists they admire and implement these techniques in their own practice. Study watercolor, illustration and beautiful techniques in oil painting, such as alla prima, glazing and sfumato. Learn the methods employed by Da Vinci, Goya, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt to paint flesh, or how to glaze over a grisaille figure like Ribera and Velazquez. For landscapes, study the work of Monet, Turner and the Russian painter Isaac Levitan. Those interested in contemporary work can learn from the drawing and painting techniques of Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud and Marlene Dumas, or the abstract techniques of Rothko , Diebenkorn and Agnes Martin. People can also take advantage of our monthly museum visits, where we learn to analyze paintings "in the flesh", the layers of paint and how they were created.
Our courses work on a modular basis and reinforce one another. See Course Syllabi . Understanding and applying the different styles you learn in these modules will ensure the development of each student’s techniques and individual artistic style.
